It took an eternity for Cobra to show. Sam was cool with Cobra coming to us as long as Dev didn't know. Because he'd probably kick Cobra's ass.
None of us wanted to be present for that throw-down.
Once Cobra arrived, we went outside.
I think the snow froze my balls off. It came down relentlessly, covering the ground in a thick layer of the stuff. It would have been gorgeous if it wasn't so deadly. Walking had become almost impossible between the ice and the snowdrifts.
My fingers and toes had gone numb the minute I stepped out of the conference hall. And I couldn't feel my jaw.
"Where's a good place to do this?" Sam asked Cobra, shielding his eyes from the falling snow. "We need to do this and get back inside."
Cobra nodded. "Agreed. Do you still have Artemis's temple here? Consecrated ground is always better, especially if there's a personal tie to it."
I thought of Em being buried near the temple and my throat constricted. It would be fitting. But still wrong. "Yeah, we sure do."
"Then let's do it there," Cobra said, picking up his shovel. "Is it still in the same location?"
"Yep." Declan hoisted a pail of scalding hot water and followed Cobra. "I hope this doesn't freeze," he murmured as he passed me.
I followed the line of Hunters. It felt wrong to do this. We did our funeral rites here, building funeral pyres and sending our fallen to Artemis.
The coiling in my gut made me nauseous.
When the time came, could I bury Em? Possibly kill her?
I didn't know.
No one spoke. We were grim-faced, freezing, and determined to beat the grave touched. Since our creation, we had always stood for the side of good and the safety of innocents. I couldn't even begin to imagine the poor people getting frozen, like human-sized ice cubes, in this insane weather.
Ixania and her cockroaches had to be stopped.
Fallon pulled her phone out of her pocket as we approached the temple. "We're at the temple now. About to start digging," she told whoever had answered her call. We'd left Michelle, Robbie, Brianna, and Joe with the infested ones. We'd help bring them out when the time came.
Assuming we didn't die out here, didn't turn into ice cubes, or get frostbitten.
Fun times.
"This good?" Sam asked. He stood beside the temple. "Or would you rather do it behind the temple? Might work a bit better."
The temple was a small, white building with columns and a wooden door. There were stained-glass windows on all four sides. Typically we would leave an offering of flowers to Artemis, but we didn't this time. No flowers to be had here.
I could hear what Sam wasn't saying. He didn't want to contaminate the temple with this grave touched stuff. We could choose to ignore it. Erase it from our minds. The only thing that would remind us was the graves. Out of sight, out of mind, right?
"Definitely behind," I said, heading that way.
"Agreed," Sam said.
"Okay, we need four graves, right?" Cobra said, readjusting his neon-green scarf.
